What is RSS and why should I use it?

RSS is great for people who are fed up with trawling websites looking for new and relevant content and for those of us who can never remember their user name and passwords to get important information from sites.

RSS is a simple technology that allows you to get the latest items delivered or fed automatically to a single place on your computer.

Many popular news web sites offer RSS feeds including the BBC, Guardian, Telegraph and Reuters and an increasing number of specialist information sites are adding RSS every day.

How do I get started?

To use RSS you need to get a news reader. There are many different types and most are free; they will all allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS feeds that you want.

The Google Directory page for newsreaders lists the available News Readers and how to get them.

After choosing a News Reader then you pick the content or feeds that you want. The exact way to do this depends on the reader - consult your readers help documentation for guidance.

Some web browsers (including Firefox and Opera) offer support for RSS without the need for an additional reader. To check if your browser does provide support then consult the browsers help documentation.
